May 15 International day against homophobia rally for same sex marriage!

Date and Time:
Saturday, May 15, 2010 -
1:00pm to 3:00pm
Location:
Cnr Swanston & La Trobe sts.

We have kicked off to a good start in 2010 seeing 2000 people march on the streets of Melbourne in support of same sex marriage rights on March 13.

Now it's time to get into our diaries the next major event in the National Year of Action - the May 15 rally, which is going to be a National day of action and a part of the International day against homophobia.

So be apart of a day where people not only all over Australia but people all over the world will be marching for LGBTI rights and against homophobia.

Heading up to an election year we need to cancel all other plans for this so we can show by numbers on the streets that we aren't going to let this issue rest and we demand it becomes an election issue.

We saw the bill voted down again in the senate in March 2010 with the appalling numbers of 45- only 5 votes. If you are outraged by this take a stand and get involved and come to the rally on May 15!

The event will be hosted by Joy FMs' Doug Pollard who recently interviewed Tony Abbott after his quickly withdrawn homophobic comments.

The Greens Senator Sarah Hanson Young will be speaking and accepting petitions with a phenomenal 100,000 signatures to table in parliament.

Despite the ALP's formal position that marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman, ALP education Minister Bronwyn Pike will be speaking in support of same sex marriage.

United Fire Fighters Union National Secretary Peter Marshall will be speaking in support of the campaign and why it is in everybody's interest to take a stand against homophobia.

National Union of Students Queer Officers Kath and Phoebe will be speaking about students taking a stand for same sex marriage rights

A High school student will be speaking about tackling homophobia at schools as it is one of the highest areas of homophobia received and suicide rates are much higher amongst LGBTI high-school students.

Ali Hogg from Equal Love will be speaking about the Equal Love campaign and where to from here and announcing the next rally and other events.

Polly Filla is back by popular demand who has put together a special performance for the occasion.

and band Jungal recently featured on the cover of Southern Star will be sharing their talents with us.

We are expecting thousands to come out and march against the homophobic ban on same-sex marriage that in August will have been in place for 6 years.

and for those over 18 there will be an afterparty at the Glasshouse (51 Gipps st Collingwood) with interstate dj Kate Munro and guests!! With drink specials and a fundraiser for Equal Love as a part of international day against homophobia!
