The Liberation of Adra

On my last day in Damascus our soldier friend Sam joined us for a late lunch. However he could not eat, as his stomach was churning from what he had just seen at the industrial satellite town of Adra.

The Syrian Arab Army had been progressively liberating a huge civilian population held hostage for more than two weeks by thousands of foreign-backed armed fighters, most notably the al Qaeda-linked Jabhat al Nusra.

Hands Off Syria & Wikileaks Team Visit Syria

The Hands Off Syria, Sydney, team was part of an Australian delegation, which included members of the Wikileaks Party, and who recently visited Syria. Hands Off Syria member, Dr Tim Anderson, was head of delegation that visited hospitals, universities, and met with civilians as well as government authorities, and Syrian President Dr Bashar al-Assad.

Predatory Hedge Funds and Argentina Face Supreme Court Showdown in Landmark Global Poverty Case

Argentina is expected to appeal to the US Supreme Court by mid-February in response to a US 2nd Circuit Court ruling ordering the country to pay $1.33 billion to predatory hedge funds. The precedent the case sets will hurt poor countries in financial distress and could allow a small group of hedge funds to target assets that benefit vulnerable populations. At the same time, debt holders who restructured their debt with Argentina have hired lawyers to help negotiate the dispute between holdout hedge funds and Argentina.

Maoist Popularity Wanes in Nepal Election

Results for Nepal's national elections show its Maoist party has plummeted in popularity, coming in a distant third and suggesting the former rebels' influence has diminished in the South Asian nation.

The centrist Nepali Congress, one of the country's oldest political parties, won 2.4 million proportional votes, followed by the Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist), which won 2.2 million votes, the Election Commission said Thursday.
