PROTEST FOR WORKERS RIGHTS

6am (and continuing 24 hours a day)
Saturday 10 March
DP World container terminal,
Friendship Road, entrance to the employee car park

(between Charlotte Road and and Inter-terminal Access Road)

Port Botany, Sydney
(public transport and car directions at end)

Concerned members of the community are calling a protest at the docking of the ship Maersk Brani at Port Botany, starting 6am on Saturday 10 March.

Why? The Port of Auckland has just sacked 300 striking workers in an effort to get rid of union representation for workers in this difficult and dangerous industry. They want to completely casualise the jobs for everyone working in the port so they would not know when they are working until the day before, or how many hours they would be allocated.

The port tried to get a few managers and scab workers to replace the unionised workers. Most ships turned around and didn't attempt to dock in Auckland due to safety concerns.

Two ships owned by the massive and highly profitable shipping multinational Maersk did dock in Auckland while the ordinary workers were on the picket line fighting for their jobs and their rights.  One of these ships will arrive in Sydney at the DP World container terminal early in the morning of Saturday 10 March. It is unknown what the condition of the vessel is, or even if the cargo is stowed safely.

Profitable multinationals do not have the right to roam the world, taking advantage of workers, reducing their wages and conditions, and forcing them to work in unsafe conditions.
