Re: President Jose Ramos Horta speaks on Western Sahara and ...
M. President is free to support the struggle of Polisario leaders to get independence but I am also free to say that he is 100% wrong on supporting an unrealistic claim. East Timor and the Western Sahara region has nothing in common. The history of the Western Sahara issue is absolutely different from the history of the East Timor fight to get independence. Polisario Front was initially founded by moroccans born in the Western Sahara region. They were initially supporting annexion to Morocco. They changed their view after beeing beaten on strike in Tan-Tan city. They were joined by many moroccan and non moroccan opponants (from Algeria, Mauritania, Mali...) to the moroccan regime. Then they were supported by Lybia then Algeria as they belonged to the Soviet Union block. The moroccan regime belonged to the American block. The idea of Polisario Front was to separate the Western Sahara in a first step then to plot the monarchy and then to unify the country. The Algerian support changed the strategy to claim a sahrawi state to make down the moroccan monarchy...AND HERE WE ARE! If you miss the genesis of the Polisario Front you will miss the real understanding of the Western Sahara issue.
