Come to a public meeting to help build the campaign to stop McDondalds opening a 24 hour store in Tecoma, in the Dangenong Ranges. This corporate development will wreck the local character and amenity of the area and we don't need to let profit driven multi-nationals dominate our local area. The local community recently stopped the development of a large supermarket in the town but the struggle continues.

Re: No to McDonalds in the Dandenong Ranges
It all stopped the moment you put up, look up the word "Wanker"
Re: No to McDonalds in the Dandenong Ranges
Nicole last time I looked Tecoma was a suburb of Melbourne
Re: No to McDonalds in the Dandenong Ranges
I'm from Tecoma and I want a McDonalds here.
i will smash every fucking window until they fuck off
if you put a mcdonalds in tecoma i will smash every fucking window until they fuck off, mcdonalds in tecoma will only attract the feral kids that have zero respect
several people commenting here with a vested interest?
I am a mother at the local school and most of us are against this planned Mc Donalds, it seems there are several people commenting here with a vested interest, why would people be on indymedia website with views like these?
resounding victory for principled, intelligent debate
HillBilly, your smiling persistence, intelligent responses to unfair abuse, clearheadedness and clarity of argument do all of us who look to indymedia unending favours. Thankyou.
There is certainly something fishy going on here with the uninformed 'locals' piping up with their 66 cents.
Again, congratulations on a resounding victory for principled, intelligent debate.
Sean
Re: No to McDonalds in the Dandenong Ranges
Thank you.
what's wrong with having a different view on some things
Do you agree with every thing Indymedia says?I would agree with about 95% of things, but surely I should be able to comment when I don't.I live in Belgrave and would not mind a McDonalds up the road what's wrong with having a different view on some things?
it was a very packed, positive & inspiring meeting
Thanks to everyone who came - it was a very packed, positive & inspiring meeting. It was very difficult to find a parking space near the school due to the larger than expected number of attendees.
We heard from Knoxfield residents that successfully knocked back a similar Mcdevelopment and we were taken through the process of lodging an objection with council & going to VCAT.
Ha Ha Ha if that was your idea of a big meeting
Ha Ha Ha if that was your idea of a big meeting I would hate to see a small meeting. There will be 10X that crowd at McDonalds opening night in Tecoma wait and see!
MOST important to write individual - not proforma- objections
The school hall was packed and all seats were taken - it was standing room only at the back. Yes, I call it a big meeting. Everyone who came in gave their name, address & signature so there is proof of the numbers.
The most important thing to take away from the meeting is that posting on the internet, signing petitions, writing letters to the editor etc are not enough. The MOST important thing we can do is to write individual - not proforma- objections to council when the application is received (expected in the next 2 weeks). That will send a powerful message to council and to VCAT if it gets there.
It is important to focus on issues such as traffic & amenity/local character in objections, as councils cannot refuse a planning application on ideological grounds.
they are the Minority now
Since the meeting they have all gone quiet, I think they realize they are the Minority now.
We could do with some proper shops
I think richard means the sweet/confectionary shop is bonton. Face it tecoma is a surburb so why should we not be able to put McDonalds in. At the moment we have DVD destination, saffron cottage, TMans pizza Bonsai bali, multiple offices, Bonton, A clothes shop, Tecoma fish and chips, a florist, REcycling clothes center, Op shop, Reptiles and fish shop, A quilt shop, A tatoo shop, Mg Hair, Stockdale and leggo, Tecoma charcoal chicken, Karate place, Big Als Pizza, Discount Calore shop, Tecoma Bakery, Barry Real Estate, The nappy ladder, Countrystyle cookies, Angelite hair designs, Furniture shop, Harcourts and physiotherapy, Medical clinic, hearing place, counselling and office block with power play ect. We could do with some proper shops so why not McDonalds. If no then why not coles, foodworks or are we too country for that??
BP has caused more devastation to the planet than any McDonalds
Sharon all of what you said makes sense, it would be nice to have a proper shop like Coles, Foodworks or McDonalds. But we are told we need shops that are good for the community like the Tatoo Shop.Thank you Sharon you are right Bonton is the sweet and confectionary shop I am talking about, it is even written on the facia facing Sandells Rd then I get that twitt Nicole saying I am not a local when she thinks Tecoma is not a suburb Sharon these are the uninformed people we are up against it is hard to argue with fools.
Sharon did you see the reply to your comment from that fool Sean Bozkewycz? who says apart from the real estate agents there is not a single franchise/branded business in Tecoma and if he was from Tecoma he would buy his petrol from that franchise/branded business BP (british petroleum)at 1524 Burwood Hwy Tecoma.BP has caused more devastation to the planet than any McDonalds has ever done but thats O/K,see the uninformed idiots we are dealing with?
support the local iga and maxi.not to mention the local store
THERE IS A COLES..or a safeway or some such super super rich conglomerate that dont need our money we could spend on our locals and local families incomes...and we should support the local iga and maxi.not to mention the local store..what the hell is wrong with these people? DONT THEY HAVE A MORAL COMPASS...i bet they dont live here..they are the ones that want it built because they have a vested money interest..for sure..
These are all local businesses run by local Tecoma residents
Sharon did you notice that apart from the real estate agents, there was not a single franchise / branded business? These are all local businesses run by local Tecoma residents. This is the core of the issue.
Re: No to McDonalds in the Dandenong Ranges
Sean you made a dick head out of yourself with that statement.
BREEDING THE ME ME ME WANT IT NOW GENERATION
RE: THOSE THAT WANT THIS BECAUSE THEY ARE TOO LAZY TO DRIVE DOWN THE ROAD..ARE YOU BEING PAID TO BE SELFISH OR WHAT?...YOU REALLY GIVE THE WRONG MESSAGE TO YOUR KIDS..YOUR BREEDING THE ME ME ME WANT IT NOW GENERATION THAT AGAIN...WILL NOT CARE FOR HERITAGE OR EVEN WANT TO LOOK AFTER YOU WHEN YOU ARE OLD...AND YOU SUPPORT A GLOBAL MISERYSHIP THAT DRIVES DOWN THE MINIMUM WAGE AND ENCOURAGES YOUNG PEOPLE TO LEAVE WORK FOR A PITTANCE..NOT TO MENTION SO MUCH MORE..NO MACDONALDS..SUPPORT THE LOCAL CAFE ACROSS THE ROAD THAT HAS JUST BEEN ADDED ON TO THE FRIENDLY SERVICE STATION..THE FOOD IS WAY BETTER, THAT WILL TAKE SO MUCH MONEY OFF OUR OTHER SMALL BUSINESS IN THE AREA..AGAIN..EAT YOUR JUNK FOOD 5 MINS DOWN THE ROAD AT THE OTHER ONE..IM SURE THE PERSON THAT RUNS THAT ONE DOESNT WANT TO LOSE THE INCOME EITHER JUST BECAUSE YOUR LAZY...OR A TROLL FOR MACCAS.
the whole McDonalds experience will kill the oil spill cafe
Megs thanks for your informative post I did not realize that liking the idea of a McDonalds in Tecoma would make my Kids not look after my when I am old.what research is this view based on.
It could also be looked at another way because you don't want McDonalds you want your own way that looks like you are the me me me me generation. You say your self it will take business away from other shops if this is the case people must want McDonalds if they don't people won't go there. If the food is better in the BP service station the same company that created oil spills in America and wrecked the place if you would rather go there than McDonalds you are the one that has no Moral Compass looks like the local cafe that has joined onto the BP has no Moral Compass either so if you want to support BP thats up to you if you think the food is better McDonalds don't stand a chance but i think people will vote with there feet and McDonalds will win because the whole McDonalds experience will kill the oil spill cafe .
You also say people are too lazy to drive 5min down the road either you are not a local and dont know how long it takes to get to McDonalds in F.T.G from Tecoma or you drive like a ass hole because it takes me 15min on the speed limit. If you think it is lazy because we won't drive to F.T.G then may be we should shut all the shops in Tecoma and Belgrave because F.T.G has all the shops we need or would you be too lazy to drive there for shopping ?It's called convenience how stupid do you think people are to believe your rant.
So to every one that likes Maccas you are Trolls Megs you are a fool see you at the opening of McDonalds in Tecoma real soon LOL
Thanks for being vocal
Some good arguments for both sides . . . (some idiotic), I personally don't want a Maccas in Tecoma therefore I support the people protesting. Thanks for being vocal and showing the 'other side' what to do if you want something/or not, as the case may be.
the place is starting to look like a run down shit hole
Shea if I want a Red Rooster in Tecoma are you saying being vocal and protest will give us Red Rooster? I don't think it works like that, the word protest means "a statement or action showing ones disapproval".The only thing I can agree with you on is some arguments are idiotic yours being one of then Shea.
Something has to be done about Tecoma with the number of vacant shops the place is starting to look like a run down shit hole McDonalds just may be what the Tecoma needs to give it a new lease of life or a very least a public Toilet!
Don't want McDonalds (or Red Rooster lol) in Tecoma
Stan, I'm saying if you want a Red Rooster, motivate yourself, figure out who you need to contact, and by all means do what you can to get yourself one. I, and many others, don't want McDonalds (or Red Rooster lol) in Tecoma, simple as that. I do, however, agree that Tecoma needs a facelift (and a public toilet), but Maccas isn't a toilet . . . or is it?
minority telling us what we can or can't have in Tecoma
Why don't you want a McDonalds Shea?.You and many others dont want McDonalds are you refering to the one hundred people that showed up to the meeting and a lot of them were rent a crowd.Did you want the tattoo shop in Tecoma?Do you think alcohol and cigarettes should be sold in Tecoma? What do you think of Pizza Lollies and fish and chips? What about the BP do you think they are more moral than McDonalds ?I would really like to hear you opinion so I can understand where you are coming from.
Shea all McDonalds stores have clean toilets inside have you ever been inside one?
You can't force a Red Rooster to open in Tecoma but you can force it not to open so your original statement is wrong no one is showing us what to do if we wan't something you argument makes as much sense as the minority telling us what we can or can't have in Tecoma
Tecoma is an eyesore, tidy it up instead of protest meetings
Are you serious!! I live in Tecoma and everyday on my walk I pick up rubbish from the local chicken shop but that's not before I walk past all of the grafiti on the buildings. I am not for or against McDonalds but the people of Tecoma should be putting their effort into tidying up this town instead of meetings about what may happen. Just my opinion. The town is an eyesore.
Clean up your act Tecoma
I would not describe Tecoma as a eyesore,a run down shit hole would be more accurate.
These people are not interested in tidying up the town look at the houses they live in, next time you visit someones house in Tecoma check out the mess inside people are just plain lazy, look at the people in the main street you would think houses have no showers here.In this town people are only interested in complaining
I have to agree with every thing else you say well put.
Getting rich on something so divisive in our community
i live in the locality, I don't want a Mc Donalds in Tecoma. Aside from it creating a more urban environment; and aside from the hi calorific nature of most of the food there, in these days of a growing problem of obesity; aside from the rubbish going through the forest and along the roadsides; I don't want to see the business people who are investing in this get rich on something that is so divisive in our community. and HEY, I am speaking for myself. what would I know?
Tecoma is a suburb of Melbourne, it is an urban environment
Belle so you are concerned about hi calorific nature of food so what do you think of the Pizza shop the Fish and chip shop the bakery and Bon Ton with the sweets they sell and lets not forget the charcoal chicken these places contribute to obesity can we expect you to try to close down these shops or is it just Mc Donalds that makes you fat?If people can't control the amount of food they stuff into their mouths how can you blame Mc Donalds for that? Why should people miss out on a treat like Mc Donalds because some fat f--k can't control the amount they eat?.Tecoma is a suburb of Melbourne It has a rail way line it is an urban environment where do you think Tecoma is out near Dandongadale or something?.Mc Donalds is only divisive in the community because people like you put your stupid opinions of disagreement out there. The bottom line is if you don't like Mc Donalds don't go there. And Hey I'm only speaking for the majority of Tecoma not the minority that like to make a loud noise and push their opinions on the Majority the numbers at your meeting proves you are in the minority!
Perhaps the local traders should provide better customer service
So Belle please enlighten us as to which McDonalds exactly go and throw their own rubbish all over the streets and forests? Would it not be the locals or are you going to blame the rubbish on the touists who are going to drive up from Toorak just get a cheese burger??? So far, other then traders scared of competition I have not heard any valid arguments. I am a swinging voter and so leaning towards a yes vote. Perhaps the local traders should provide better customer service and they would have nothing to fear from competition. Just my opinion.
Over 1,000 letters against, 8 in favour, council rejects Macca
Hey Brian Brett Richard Sam Vinny,
Back to the drawing board huh?
Over 1,000 letters against the proposal and 8 letters backing the Macca's Tecoma proposal.
Council rejects the McDonald's proposal.
You should change the nature of your various pseudonyms, you give yourself away like the chump you are. Enjoy your heart attack.
No Dean, Mario, Kelly or other trolls were to be seen
Last night there were no supporters for McDonalds other then the two stooges who were insulting everyones intelligence by stating that we " may think that Mc Nicol Rd is opposite the proposed development site" nice work Mr Flemming when a few minutes later you were proven so wrong from your own raport by a councel member.
No Dean, Mario, Kelly or other trolls were to be seen, then again maybe it was just one person all along.
Sorry Larry, you will miss out on the big opening night.
Threatening letters in council not appreciated - a PR nightmare
I agree, well done to all the real people who turned up and stopped this horrible abomination from happening. It was good to see real hills spirit.
We are not against big business - but when they threaten us in letters in council meetings it is never appreciated. I won't eat their pretend food again on principle now.
What a PR nightmare.
leave the Kids alone let them have their fun
Come to a public meeting to help build the campaign to stop McDondalds opening a 24 hour store in Tecoma,Why would Dean, Mario, Kelly or others who are in favour of a McDonalds attend a meeting to stop McDonalds?I could not think of anything worse than being in a room with people who think their opinion is the only thing that matters, when it is quite clear these people need to get a life and this is the most important thing in their lives is to stop McDonalds Grow up and leave the Kids alone let them have their fun you Babies
Re: leave the Kids alone let them have their fun
I agree with what you said. I am a kid and I don't anything that is wrong with maccas. They are good for you and so what if you litter there is litter everywhere anyway and those cafe do gay food. People saying they dont want maccas are probably gay too
Re: leave the Kids alone let them have their fun
I have just been told that Dean, Mario, Kelly and Roger are real people someone said they are all the same people but that is just because they all sound the same and there are other people who sound the same as them here but I have been told that they are real too. I know the 600 people at the meeting last week were from rent a crowd and if you dont believe me it means you are dumb or gay or both.
Only the McDonalds spokesperson was not respectful
Dear Roger, if you were better informed you would know that people in support of McDonalds could have their say too.
In my experience most people who live in the hills are very pasionate about their lifestyle. They chose to live here as is it such an unique place to live, something that needs preserving. Thats why the tourist come to the hills. Not to see the big golden arches, there is plenty of opportunity to see them elsewhere.
The atmosphere at the meeting was good, respectful, the only one who was not respectful was the spokesperson for mcdonalds.
It is clear you do not have a clue about what happened at the meeting. If you were there you would have been surprised by how many young people there were who are against mcd.
It just shows that afterall we were not a minority, quite the opposite. The handful of mcdonald supporters had every chance to speak too, i thing their arrogance stopped them from doing so, maybe they thought they had won all ready..............
Tecoma majority could not fit in the school room
Living in the hills if you were better informed you would know that the people who organized the Meeting said "Come to a public meeting to help build the campaign to stop McDondalds opening a 24 hour store in Tecoma"It did not say, come to a public meeting to share your points of view on a 24hr McDonalds store in Tecoma did it? the meeting was to help build the campaign to stop McDondalds opening a 24 hour store in Tecoma and you wonder why no one for a McDonalds store showed up you are full of shit.
You say "In my experience most people who live in the hills are very pasionate about their lifestyle. They chose to live here as is it such an unique place to live"Well I have lived in Tecoma all my Life like all my friends and we bought hoses here because they were cheep and our friends and family are close by my mates from school did the same
Tell me how many people were at the meeting?and I will tell you if it was the majority of people in Tecoma, I do know the population of Tecoma and how big the room at the school is where you had the meeting and I can tell you the Majority of the population of Tecoma could not fit in a room that big which leads me to the conclusion you are speaking shit!
Maccas would probably get approval from VCAT
Ease off a touch folks.
No need to get abusive on this issue.
Rational discussion will do.
No I don't regard a Maccas in Tecoma as desirable.
Yes I do live in Tecoma.
I think the proposal from Maccas is at least reasonable in terms of the style of the building, unlike the previous supermarket proposal.
The traffic management is an issue, enough people cross the road or prop in the middle of Sandells now without increasing the traffic further.
Maccas refuse is also a problem, we have existing refuse issues to manage with those that can't manage to walk 10 metres to a bin, no need to make it worse.
I am comfortable with the current level choice of food (fast and otherwise) within walking distance of home, if I want wider choice I will travel, or cook it at home.
Personally I think Maccas will probably get approval if they take their case to VCAT, which is sad but I believe likely.
Stephen.
McDonalds Letter to the Council
Here's a link to the letter McDonalds sent to the council intimating that people who want to fund the VCAT objection to the Tecoma McDonalds could spend their money on something more worthwhile.
