Boycott Apartheid Israel! Boycott Black Pearl!

At the last incredibly successful BDS action (video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2zCd11hWyeM) a motion moved by Students for Palestine activists to hold another action on the 1st of July was endorsed unanimously by the 250+ crowd.

Why wouldn't we do it again! We shut down the whole of Melbourne Central, including Black Pearl, by our loud and angry protest, before running around to dodge the police and sneak around to the... Max Brenner in QV, which we also shut down for the whole night!

So here's the next episode in the campaign to boycott Apartheid Israel here in Melbourne! Let's mark the new financial year by forcing these Apartheid companies into the red.

This is the 7th year since over 170 Palestinian Civil Society groups called for Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Apartheid Israel.

In Melbourne, we have been involved in boycotting the 100% Israeli owned corporations Jericho (now renamed as Black Pearl) and Max Brenner.

Jericho/Black Pearl is a cosmetics company that exploits minerals from the Dead Sea. While they profit from this resource, the indigenous Palestinian people who live on the land surrounding the Dead Sea are regularly denied access. Palestinian access to the Dead Sea is prevented by Israel's military occupation of Palestinian lands, which include networks of checkpoints, Israeli only roads and the Apartheid Wall. Max Brenner Chocolates is a 100% Israeli-owned company belonging to the Strauss Group, the second largest Israeli food and beverage company. On the “corporate responsibility” section of its website, the Strauss Group emphasises the support it gives to the Israeli army. The Strauss group is proud that for more than 30 years, it has supported the Golani reconnaissance platoon renowned for its involvement 2006 invasion of Lebanon and other atrocities. As their website puts it:

“Our connection with soldiers goes as far back as the country, and even further. We see a mission and need to continue to provide our soldiers with support, to enhance their quality of life and service conditions, and sweeten their special moments."

We've already had a good success, getting Jericho removed from Melbourne Central for over 2 weeks, and then rebranded as Black Pearl... But now they're back, and so are we!
