Topic: HOMES WITH NO HEATING AND COOLING
Convener: Ben Somerville btsomer@gmail.com
Speakers:
Tim Adams, Principal of F2 Design and author of the article “HOUSE WITH NO BILL”S” (in current edition of ReNew magazine). He is President of the Building Designers Association of Victoria. He set up the 10 Star Challenge in 2011.
Perry Eckhart, Managing Director of Nutech Paints.
Meeting Outline:
10 Star Challenge: The aim of the 10 Star Challenge program is to enable designers and thermal performance assessors to develop the skills required to design totally passive dwellings. This year designs for both single dwellings and multi-unit designs have been submitted. Tim will provide a summary of the six finalists (one being his entry), outlining what it takes to design dwellings that don’t need heating or cooling.

Cool Roofs: Perry will examine the benefits of utilising cool roof technology in both retrofit and new roof installations and discuss the economic life cycle and cost/benefit ratio of cool roof coatings compared to conventional roof coatings. Perry will also cover a 2011 U.S. study which suggests that although a reflecting roof will decrease temperatures in a single building, it could raise the “heat island effect” even more and could actually contribute to global warming. http://www.nutech.com.au/
