The Stringer: Do not play with people's lives - Climate of death
http://thestringer.com.au/do-not-play-with-peoples-lives-climate-of-deat...
17 Sep 15: "Despite the standout work of various individuals, our Governments have failed to respond to the catastrophic humanitarian crisis sweeping this nation, that is taking the lives of children, young adults, of human beings denied the sense of hope that the majority of Australians enjoy. The statistical narrative is startling and indicts the nation but there continues an effective silence. Our governments have normalised inequality and injustices. ... " By Gerry Georgatos, a suicide prevention researcher with various national and other projects and is also a community consultant with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention Evaluation Project (ATSISPEP)

The Stringer: When will they implement the CNS? Western Australia's deplorable pace of change is glacial
http://thestringer.com.au/when-will-they-implement-the-cns-western-austr...
17 Sep 15: "Last year I founded a campaign to urge of the implementation of the Custody Notification Service (CNS) across the nation but without delay in Western Australia and the Northern Territory. In meeting Federal Ministers and State Governments I implored the wisdom of this move – in reference to the saving of lives. In NSW, the CNS has led to zero lives lost of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders detained in police watch houses – since 1998. What more need be written or said? The cost of the CNS on an annual basis is a little more than a half million Australian dollars – equivalent to a coronial inquiry or two! ... The CNS was a recommendation of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody – Final Report 1992." By Gerry Georgatos

The Stringer: National Indigenous Human Rights Awards
http://thestringer.com.au/national-indigenous-human-rights-awards-10836
14 Sep 15: "The National Indigenous Human Rights Awards are nearing – the second of these annual awards. What separates these awards from others is that they are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander awards only. They were long overdue and last year’s inaugural awards night went off big time in recognising exclusively the most profound human struggle on this continent – the First Peoples rights struggle. Three awards were established – The Dr M.Yunupingu Human Rights Achievement Award, presented by the late Yothu Yindi singer’s wife, Yalmay Yunupingu. The Edward ‘Koiki’ Mabo Social Justice Award, presented by the late land rights campaigner’s daughter Gail Mabo. The Anthony Mundine Courage Award, presented the three-times world champion boxer himself. ... " By Gerry Georgatos

Gerry Georgatos - The Stringer

"His predominant work is in suicide prevention research and in unveiling racism and in articulating the ways forward. ... Some of his stories on homelessness in First Nations communities have led to many people housed and to restorative cultural projects.  ... He is an expert in his fields, particularly in the understanding of racism and in suicide prevention - and involves himself at the coalface in addition to interfacing with Governments. ... "
