refugees on hunger strike at MITA

In the late hours of the 7th April 28 refugees went on hunger strike at Broadmedows denetion centre (MITA).

These 28 refugees incluing 25 Tamils, two Burmese Rohingyas and one Iranian

Many of the refugees on hunger strike have been in detention for between 2- 4 years and have received negative ASIO results, ASIO does not need to give the person receiving the negative result a reason for the negative result.

All of the refugees stated they have risked their lives to seek assylum, they have been given false hope and false promises

Justice Margaret Stone visited the men last week and stated that they would have access to why they have negative results from ASIO, but is unable to give timeframes for when their cases will be reviewed.

Last week the refugees have stated that If the Australian government does not release us, we want to end our lives.

The men have put out a message in writing to Prime Minister Julia Gillard, Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and ASIO director-general of security David Irvine to support their claims for asylum.

They have said they appreictaed all the support anyone gave them, if they were at vigils, camped, visited the camp or passed on the message about their hunger strike.
