29 Jan 13: "Deaths in Custody continues and at the same abominable rates since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (1987-1991). However the rates of custodial deaths that led to the call for the Royal Commission were actually less than since the end of the Royal Commission. So what has gone wrong, why are deaths in custody - proportion to prison populations and in terms of crude totals - on the rise? Several years ago as part of my PhD research into Australian Custodial Systems and Australian Deaths in Custody I did the comparative sums on deaths in custody in countries ... " By Gerry Georgatos

The ALP national executive confirmed the Olympic athlete had been pre-selected on Tuesday, prevailing over four other candidates. 29 Jan 13: "Indigenous Olympic gold medallist Nova Peris has been officially endorsed to run for the ultra-safe Senate position in the Northern Territory. At the next federal election, she's expected to become Australia's first Indigenous woman in Federal Parliament. The Prime Minister's decision to bypass the normal pre-selection process sparked a backlash in the Territory branch of the ALP (Australian Labor Party). The woman who's been forced to make way for Nova Peris, the incumbent Labor Senator Trish Crossin, has accepted today's result. But she has thrown down a fresh challenge to Nova Peris to show she'll stand up for Indigenous people. Sara Everingham reports from Darwin."

Green Left: The struggle against racism in Australia
http://www.greenleft.org.au/node/53185
29 Jan 13: "But, while some may ignore or downplay the ugly side of Australia’s history, there is no escaping the facts: January 26 is the day Aboriginal dispossession began. It marks the beginning of a process of genocide, of land-grabbing, unpaid wages, and the smashing of traditional cultures to replace them with what we now know as Australia. Is that worth celebrating? If so, it reveals something of the racism deeply embedded in Australia’s history. ... Dispossession did not end - January 26 is not simply an historical anniversary, it is a painful and sobering reminder of the racism entrenched in mainstream Australian politics today."
