14 Jan 13: "While the rate of Indigenous incarceration is on the rise across Australia, South Australian community leaders are calling for a rethink on a new bill which could see more people going to jail for not paying fines, NITV News reports. ... The Aboriginal Legal Rights Movement says it's concerned the State's proposed 'Penalty Enforcement Bill' could see people jailed for not meeting unpaid fines. Legal Aid's Lawyer Christopher Charles says current legislation allows the magistrate to consider incidents case by case. But he says under the new laws, discretionary powers and other provisions that allow people to perform community service to pay off their debt will be removed."

14 Jan 13: "Warren Mundine, prominent Australian Aboriginal leader is calling for a national summit to tackle the alarming rates of Indigenous incarceration. GenerationOne head, Warren Mundine, told reporters from the ABC that the rising incarceration levels for Aboriginal youth is a ticking time bomb for both the Aborignal community and the wider Australian community. Mr Mundine told reporters the Aboriginal population makes up 2 to 3 per cent of the Australian population… and yet it is over 53 per cent of the juvenile justice and prison rates."

14 Jan 13: "QUEENSLAND: Queensland’s child protection inquiry will examine the over-representation of young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the state’s child protection system this week. ... The Brisbane hearing has called on nine witnesses, including Indigenous elders, parents, academics and representatives from service and legal providers, to give evidence. Witnesses have already told the inquiry Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are nine times more likely than other children to be subject to a protection order or an out of home care order in Queensland."

14 Jan 13: "The Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced Professor Helen Milroy as a Royal Commissioner into child sexual abuse in Australian institutions. Professor Milroy is currently the Director of the Centre for Aboriginal Medical and Dental Health at the University of Western Australia. "Professor Helen Milroy [...] is a consultant psychiatrist with extensive experience in child and adolescent health, including the mental health impacts of child sexual assault," said Ms. Gillard. The experienced Aboriginal health profession and Palkyu woman ... "

11 Jan 13: "THE Australian Indigenous Doctors' Association (AIDA) has congratulated its former President Professor Helen Milroy on her appointment as one of six members of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse. Prof Milroy is a Palyku woman with family from the Pilbara region, Australia's first Aboriginal doctor, first Aboriginal psychiatrist, and only Aboriginal child and adolescent psychiatrist. AIDA President Dr Tammy Kimpton said Prof Milroy was an obvious choice for the role and would 'add critical understandings to shape the Royal Commission's deliberations and recommendations to government'."
