DR Congo: Oil company threatens gorilla forest

Dear friends of the rainforests,

the dense jungle of Virunga National Park is the home of many rare animals. Africa’s oldest nature reserve is best known for the 380 mountain gorillas, members of a severely endangered species, who live in the thicket of the montane rain forests found in the park.

Now the national park, the gorillas and the people living along the lake face an existential threat. The UK-based oil company SOCO International plc wants to drill for oil in the park. The UNESCO has issued a sharply worded note of protest to the Congolese government, declaring the oil drilling to be in violation of international law. The park administration and the local population have also joined forces in an attempt to prevent the drilling.

Please write to the responsible institutions and demand the preservation of Virunga National Park!
