You helped win a fairer go for refugees
Thanks to your help, the Government has finally agreed that refugees deserve the right to have their case reviewed if ASIO says they are a risk.
This is a win for basic fairness and common sense.
The community and the High Court saw that. Now, with the support of people like you, the Greens have been able to pressure the Government to start closing the legal black hole that has consumed nearly 60 people.
As Christine said to me this morning, this goes to show that taking a principled position and standing up for treating refugees compassionately is always the right thing to do. With strong advocacy and negotiation, and with your support, we can make life better for people.
But there is still more to do.
There are 62 people, including 7 children, who have been found to be genuine refugees but are still in detention because ASIO says they are a risk. Now they have a right of appeal, but Minister Bowen should release the children immediately.
We are asking you to keep fighting to end the cruel and inhumane detention of these children and their families by writing to Immigration Minister Chris Bowen to ask for their release.
I have met families with small children who are growing up in indefinite detention despite being found to be genuine refugees.
We need to do all that we can to make the Government stop this gross injustice.
Yours sincerely,
Sarah Hanson-Young
P.S. There is no timeframe for how long children can be kept in detention. Please ask Minister Bowen to free them immediately.
