"In the three years since Australia endorsed the Declaration, the Government has yet to deliver on incorporating it into domestic law. Instead it has passed legislation which directly contradicts the minimum standards set out in the Declaration," said Monica Morgan, Manager of Amnesty International's Indigenous Rights Program. ... "The passing of the Stronger Futures Bills in late June, despite widespread condemnation by Aboriginal communities, advocates and even the UN, shows that the Declaration remains more of an aspiration than a reality. ... ""

The UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous people, James Anaya, is set to meet 75 people from indigenous communities, the federal government and mining industry officials at a round table in Melbourne. The unofficial visit is part of Mr Anaya's work on a global study into how the resources industry affects indigenous people."
