2 Jul 12: "Dr Djiniyini Gondarra, Yolngu Nations Assembly spokesperson, is calling on the Federal Government to lower the Aboriginal flag in Canberra, in the wake of the Stronger Futures bill being passed.
"The Government has shown absolute disregard for our wishes and our human rights", Dr Gondarra said. "By overruling the wishes of the people, the Government has declared a war on democracy. We call on it to lower our flag to half mast, to acknowledge the hurt Stronger Futures will cause our people."
The Stronger Futures legislation, which passed through the Senate in the early hours of June 29, has been condemned as racist by the Yolngu Nations and many Aboriginal, community and church organisations. 42,000 Australians signed a petition calling on the government to withdraw the legislation. ... "

The Australian Lawyers Alliance is a national association of lawyers, academics and other professionals dedicated to the promotion and protection of justice, freedom and the rights of the individual.
In light of the Attorney General, Nicola Roxon’s refusal to refer the Stronger Futures bills for human rights review by the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights on 28 June 2012, we have drafted our own Statement of Non-Compliance with Human Rights, to indicate a number of rights affected or directly undermined by this legislative package.
Our Statement does not purport to be legal advice, but a brief commentary that aims to ventilate the issues that might have been by a Joint Parliamentary Committee. ... "

Social workers and union members on Monday started a two-week vigil outside Bankstown Centrelink Centre to protest the rollout of income management. About 50 demonstrators gathered a day after the Bankstown local government area became one of five national income management trial sites."

2 Jul 12: "A new version of the Northern Territory Intervention, renamed as the Stronger Futures bill, was passed in the early hours of the morning by the Senate late last week. This extended various policies of control and management for another decade. It also introduced the policy of welfare quarantining in five trial local councils across Australia including the Western Sydney suburb of Bankstown. Bankstown was identified as an area of high unemployment and long-term welfare dependency by the Federal Government. Stop the Intervention Collective Sydney along with other various organisations, unions and individuals have today rallied against the new policy that came into effect on the first of July.

People who take alcohol into prescribed areas in the Northern Territory will now face fines of up to $11,000 or six months in jail. People's Alcohol Action Coalition spokesman Doctor John Boffa says he thinks the measures will reduce the amount of alcohol taken into remote communities."
