World Serengeti day action March 19th 2011

On the 19th of March 2011, A small group of people gathered at the Tanzanian embassy in Melbourne to show the opposition to the proposed Serengeti highway and highlight an alternative route around the Serengeti national park.

The Serengeti National Park a world Heritage listed UNESCO site is under threat of a highway; the government has made plans to put a highway right in the path of the world’s biggest mass migration of wildlife in the world, the famous 1.5 Million strong Wildebeest and Zebra herds. Biodiversity experts and Scientist have warned "The road will cause an environmental disaster," in a commentary published by the science journal Nature.

The idea put forward by the Government of Germany, Scientist, tourist operators and conservationist is an alternative route that would be around 250 kilometers farther south, Away from Wildlife and the park.
If the road goes ahead there will be a huge increase of Poaching, road collisions, and spread of weed species and massive disruption of the migratory route’s walked for millions of years by the native wildlife.
