Campaign for abortion rights intensifies with not guilty verdict

Media statement by the Pro-Choice Action Collective

Abortion rights campaigners vow to intensify campaign

Pro-Choice Action Collective activist, Kathy Newnam said:
“Today’s acquittal of a young Cairns couple in the abortion case in Cairns is a victory for abortion rights. The fact is that the couple never had a case to answer – a woman has the right to control her own body.

"The verdict was met with prolonged applause and cheering from abortion rights supporters in the public gallery.

“It is an absolute disgrace that this couple have had to go through the trauma of facing these charges. For eighteen months they faced the prospect of years in prison. They have had their lives and personal decisions dragged through the courts. They have had their lives turned upside down.

“The case should never have been brought – the anti-abortion laws should not exist. Women have the right to choose abortion.

“The Pro-Choice Action Collective and other abortion rights supporters have vowed to intensify their campaign against the anti-abortion laws.

“This can never be allowed to happen again. We will build the fight to repeal the laws and the Bligh government should know that they are playing with fire if they think they can continue to ignore the demands of the people.

“The Pro-Choice Action Collective will launch the next stage of the campaign at a protest speakout next Friday October 15, 5pm at Brisbane Square (outside the Casino).

“We want to see all supporters of a woman’s right to choose abortion at the protest. Let’s celebrate the victory – but more importantly, let’s ensure that this never, ever happens again – let’s build a campaign that the government can’t afford to ignore”.

The laws against rape and murder are quite old and archaic. Can you campaign against those next?
