Change this election

By The GetUp Team

What if $20 a week could help change this election? With the change you'd spend on coffee, you can help turn your principles into progress.

You've told us what you want to change in this election. It's time for action to solve the climate crisis. It's time to fix the broken mental health system that's shattering young lives. It's time to protect Australia's precious forests and to fight the conservative hysteria about refugees.

We hear you. This year GetUp will run Australia's largest ever independent election effort. We'll tackle Tony Abbott's extreme conservative agenda head-on, and force Kevin Rudd to step-up on the issues he's abandoned: climate change and refugees. It's about putting people back into politics. So how can we change the election? It starts with the loose change jangling in your pocket or purse.

Today we're launching 'Australia GetsUp 2010'. If thousands of us chip in, even $20 a week until polling day, we can create a fighting fund to power our grassroots movement this election. Can you spare $20 a week?

Politicians promise change - but it takes a people-powered movement to make it happen. In 2007, GetUp shocked the political world by running the biggest, most ambitious grassroots election campaign Australia has ever seen. In 2010 we will be bigger still:

Bringing the Obama campaign's secret weapon - 'Camp Obama' - to Australia as Camp GetUp: weekend-long training on integrating powerful stories with strategy and skills to transform members into persuasive campaigners;

Staff in targeted marginal electorates to help over ten thousand GetUp members mobilise and contact swing voters to talk about refugees, climate change, healthcare, forests and more;

More GetUp volunteers at the polling booths in marginal electorates than the major parties - talking about the issues that are important to you;

Online tools for voters in electorates across the country to cut through the politics as usual and get engaged this election; and

Advertising and media campaigns to challenge the political establishment and shape the national agenda.
This will take significant resources, and not just in the final weeks of the election. We need to build the infrastructure and put organisers in place to channel your energy and talents starting now.

By chipping in you're investing in your own ability, and the capacity of over three hundred thousand fellow GetUp members, to create a better and fairer Australia. On its own our spare change doesn't amount to much. With thousands of other GetUp donors, however, our small change can create lasting political change. Just $20 a week until election day can make a huge impact. Can you be part of it?

Yes, I can do that!

Thanks for everything you do,
The GetUp Team

P.S. Look under your couch cushions or under your bed. Money you didn't even know about could be making a real difference. Can you commit now to donating $20 or more each week until this year's election? https://www.getup.org.au/campaign/Australia_GetsUp_2010&id=1101
