Pay inequity in Australia is getting worse. In 2009, Equal Pay Day was held on September 1st, symbolising how long into the year a woman must work in order to earn what a man made in the previous financial year. This year, the date was even later: the gender pay gap increased from 17% to 18%. Equal pay was formally “won” in 1960, 1969 and 1972, but it remains as elusive as ever. This discussion circle will explore why the stark gender-based pay disparity exists and persists. We’ll learn about decades of struggle to close the gap.
