The Australian government expends an estimated $1.7 billion on responding to illicit drugs every year, with policing comprising 64% of this expenditure. One core assumption underpinning this investment is that police can deter, discourage or prevent drug offending. It is argued that drug laws and enforcement of those laws will reduce involvement in drug use and trafficking. But, there remains very limited research into the extent or nature of deterrent effects. One cause of this gap is methodological.

The secret recording & AFP corruption

In 2005 the AFP were passed a secret recording of a man discussing the collection, from Sydney Airport, of the marijuana which was found in Schapelle Corby's bag in Bali.

They hid it. They buried it. They pretended that it did not exist.

They not only did this whilst Schapelle was being destroyed in Indonesia, but they did it whilst the man in question was fighting the media after they had damned his claims and presented him as a liar.

Children accused and sentenced as 'people smugglers' - Children in Australian adult prisons. Children or adults? Hero humanitarians or impoverished 'smugglers' (crew)? Law is an ass when age determination practices do not go beyond reasonable doubt.

Indonesian 'crew' who assist in the passage of Asylum Seekers are charged with 'people smuggling' by Australian authorities. However there shall come a time when members of the legal fraternity will raise the question as to the legal standing of these charges. If the passengers who are seeking Asylum are for instance all granted refugee visas and security clearances by Australia then how is it possible for anyone to be charged with 'people smuggling'?
