Refugee advocates rally to support refugees in immigration limbo at Broadmeadows

Over 300 people gathered to support the 55 asylum seekers in immigration detention at the Broadmeadows Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation (MITA) Centre, organised by the Refugee Action Collective (Victoria). 55 asylum seekers have refugee status but are in immigration limbo as they have adverse security assessments from ASIO with no right of appeal or ability to question ASIO's sources. More than 30 of these people are locked up at Broadmeadows, some for more than 4 years, with no end in sight.

ASIO negative Tamil refugee attempts suicide - second in one month

RAC Press Release> Fellow detainees rescued a Tamil refugee who had attempted suicide by hanging from a roof beam at Melbourne Immigration Transit Accommodation centre at 1.30 am this (Friday) morning.

The Tamil refugee, the first Tamil to receive a negative ASIO finding had been in detention for 37 months. He was taken to hospital by ambulance, unconscious and with a weak pulse. His present condition is not known. The refugee is in his early thirties.

Refugee activists picket SERCO office in Melbourne - 16 September 2011

The protest, organised by the Melbourne University Refugee Action Collective (MURAC), comes as bipartisan support for offshore processing faces a crisis of legitimacy following the High Court ruling against the Malaysia Solution.

THESE 3 men were deported from Australia in October 2009 on the grounds
that they were found not to have believable claims that they would
suffer persecution on return.

Clearly someone got it wrong. These men have been comprehensively
tortured AND TWO YEARS LATER ARE STILL IN PRISON WITHOUT BEING CHARGED.

On October 22, 2009 the NOR 66 risked the high seas in a direct journey from Sri Lanka to Christmas Island, 27 days, with 30 Asylum Seekers. Three of them were Rwuan T. Senavirathna, Roshan Warnakulasuriya Fernando and Tharanga Warnakulasuriya Fernando (these two are cousins). Their are lives are at risk if they are returned to Sri Lanka.

Overnight the Christmas Island Detention Centre roof protest escalated with the response a severe lockdown. Christmas Island Detention Centre is now as bad as Woomera and Baxter. UN Observers must be located in these unlawful Detention Centres.

RISE is deeply concerned at the reported epidemic of attempted suicides which have taken place at Darwin Detention Centre this week.

The lack of transparency and openness between the detainees and the Australian Government is causing severe mental anguish for the detainees. They feel they are no longer able to cope and that their pleas are continuing to fall on deaf ears.

Indonesian 'crew' who assist in the passage of Asylum Seekers are charged with 'people smuggling' by Australian authorities. However there shall come a time when members of the legal fraternity will raise the question as to the legal standing of these charges. If the passengers who are seeking Asylum are for instance all granted refugee visas and security clearances by Australia then how is it possible for anyone to be charged with 'people smuggling'?

Its time to demand the Greens take real action against mandatory detention

It is time the refugee movement in Australia demands the Greens use their power in Parliament to force the ALP to end the cruel policy of mandatory detention. It is unacceptable for the Green’s to keep a racist Government in power. The Greens make regular public statements criticizing the length of time people are kept in detention and their representatives even give speeches from the platform at rallies against mandatory detention calling for a more humane policy. However as the detention system lurches from one crisis to crisis and the ALP moves further to the right in embracing ever more punitive policies towards asylum seekers the Greens continue to keep the Government in power.
