A University of Sydney researcher has received an award for groundbreaking work into capturing carbon emissions - research important to mitigating climate change by reducing atmospheric carbon pollution. Dr Deanna D'Alessandro, a postdoctoral fellow based in the School of Chemistry at Sydney University, was awarded a L'Oréal Australia For Women in Science Fellowship for her research on ways to capture and release carbon dioxide, hydrogen and other gases using molecular sponges.

A hung parliament with neither the ALP nor the Coalition able to claim government in their own right. That is the result of last Saturday’s federal election as The Guardian goes to press. It is a fitting outcome for the major parties. Labor, the Liberals and the Nationals have become completely remote from the communities they claim they want to serve. Their “solutions” to the pressing concerns of the people are less and less convincing and trust that they will ever deliver on their commitments has nosedived. Their close ties to the corporate sector are plain for all to see.
The ACT Government has announced cuts to greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent by 2020, and 80 per cent by 2050, based on 1990 levels. The targets were announced by Minister for the Environment Climate Change and Water, Simon Corbell when tabling the Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Bill 2010 in the ACT legislative assembly.
A group of fascists and neo nazis were found in Newtown this afternoon. They gathered provocatively at the "I have a dream" mural wall in Newtown. A hundred or so people of the Newtown community spontaneously gathered and overwhelmed them with their powerful presence and voices. The people chanted "nazis out of Newtown, nazis off the planet". They were physically confronted and forced to flee with their tail between their legs escorted by cops.

Julian Assange has revealed in an interview on SBS Dateline program that he fled Australia after the arrest of Private Manning over the release of the Collateral Murder video of civilians being killed by the U.S. in Iraq. Sources indicated the U.S. had requested his detention and interogation as a "counter esponiage" request. This fear of reprisal from the U.S. has greatly increased since the release of the Afghan Diaries, over 90,000 secret U.S. documents on the Afghan War recently.
Tuesday evening was supposed to be a rally with 2GB conservative radio shock jock Alan Jones railing against Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moores plans for expanding cycling infrastructure and the recently completed Bourke Road Cycleway. However, cyclists from Bikesydney organised a counter event at the Sydney Town Hall in support of cycleways which drew up to 300 people. Alan Jones was nowhere to be seen.

The Stop the War Coalition (StWC) condemns the latest Australian government’s purchase of 18 drones (Shadow 200) and training packages worth $175 m.
Ms Marlene Obeid, spokesperson for the anti-war group, said “the drones are part of an offensive weapons system that, almost certainly, will be linked to US systems in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
“In other words, Australia will be subsidising US assault operations, which are more than likely to result in the death of more Afghan women and children.

"There is not occupation of territory, on the one hand, and independence of persons on the other. It is the country as a whole, its history, its daily pulsation that are contested, disfigured … under these conditions, the individual’s breathing is an observed breathing. It is a combat breathing".

Why is a ground breaking solar research facility losing research funding at such a crucial time for transitioning from coal fired power stations to renewable energy? On Monday 26 July Greens staffer Tim Hollo revealed on Twitter that research funding had not been renewed for the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Advanced Silicon Photovoltaics and Photonics based at the University of NSW.

Policy Plans released by Julia Gillard and her Climate Change Minister Penny Wong for mandatory fuel efficiency standards and a $2000 rebate for trading in pre-1995 cars for new fuel efficient vehicles, were cautiously welcomed by environmentalists while being criticised for not going far enough and being funded by cuts to other climate change action programs such as Carbon Capture and Storage and solar energy. "Under this plan, Australia's fuel efficiency standards for new vehicles will be about a quarter of a century behind China's when they are eventually law. We must make our cars cleaner quicker." said Don Henry, Australian Conservation Foundation executive director.
Sydney community radio is unique for its non-profit structure and for providing a voice for groups that would otherwise not get access to the mainstream media. But smaller stations in this sector seem to have been completely overlooked as part of Australia’s move to go digital.

Outside the building Climate activists from Rising Tide Newcastle had dumped a ute full of coal at the entrance. The protesters called on the Gillard Government to announce a climate change policy that addresses Australia's principal source of greenhouse pollution - coal.

The racism-in-rugby furore leading to Timana Tahu handing back his Blues' jersey is not an isolated incident, says Michael Anderson, an Aboriginal political activist and former professional League player.
The NRL says there is no racism in rugby league. Many voices, including Aboriginal ex and current players, say there is.
Ex Manly player Anderson says for racist comments to still be brushed over within the NRL is an
indictment on the league.
He says racist attitudes in sport start at home - and are rife in country areas.
