Inquiry to review Australia’s diplomatic response against the death penalty

 

Australia Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, has commissioned a parliamentary inquiry to review Australia’s diplomatic efforts against the death penalty, following the executions last April of drug traffickers, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan in Bali.

A parliamentary human rights subcommittee, chaired by former attorney-general Philip Ruddock, will examine Australia’s current engagement on capital punishment, and will recommend further steps the government can take on the world stage.

INDONESIA - Death By Firing Squad

Execution by firing squad is the common capital punishment method used in Indonesia for a number of crimes including drug trafficking. The barbaric and cruel method has remained unchanged since 1964. Most prisoners on death row in Indonesia have been waiting more than ten years for execution.

The condemned prisoners are notified only 72 hours before their pending execution by firing squad. The prisoners are then transfered to a remote island location. In the middle of the night they They are and taken to an undisclosed isolated location to be executed by firing squad.

According to President Jokowi and Vice President Jusuf Kalla, drug trafficking leads to thousands of fatalities every year. It is therefore an “extraordinary crime” for which the only appropriate penalty is death by firing squad.

INDONESIA: Mixed messages on fate of drug traffickers on death row

Some time soon in Indonesia, five men will be taken before dawn from their isolation cells to secret locations. White aprons will be hung carefully around their necks, with red targets positioned over their chests. They will be offered blindfolds, and asked if they would like to stand, sit or lie down.

Then their hearts will be riddled with judicially sanctioned bullets until they are dead.
