Federal Election 2010: Major break with two-party system

A hung parliament with neither the ALP nor the Coalition able to claim government in their own right. That is the result of last Saturday’s federal election as The Guardian goes to press. It is a fitting outcome for the major parties. Labor, the Liberals and the Nationals have become completely remote from the communities they claim they want to serve. Their “solutions” to the pressing concerns of the people are less and less convincing and trust that they will ever deliver on their commitments has nosedived. Their close ties to the corporate sector are plain for all to see.

ACT government takes the lead in climate action emission reduction targets

The ACT Government has announced cuts to greenhouse gas emissions by 40 per cent by 2020, and 80 per cent by 2050, based on 1990 levels. The targets were announced by Minister for the Environment Climate Change and Water, Simon Corbell when tabling the Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Bill 2010 in the ACT legislative assembly.

Climate activists protest Julia Gillard over ALP climate change policy

ALP policy on climate change action has been strongly criticised by environment and climate action groups with protests at Julia Gillard's climate change policy launch in Brisbane, and protests at Julia Gillard's Werribee electoral office and her Melbourne Treasury Place office.

Genocide of Aborigines since invasion, international conference told

Melbourne, 13 July 2010 - - An Aboriginal leader has told about 500 international psychologists and psychiatrists meeting here that Australia has perpetrated genocide on Aboriginal people since the white invasion and continues to do so.

Michael Anderson, leader of the 3,000 Euahlayi, whose lands straddle the border between northwest New South Wales and southwest Queensland, made the accusation to a genocide section of the 27th conference of the International Association of Applied Psychology, running from 12 to 16 July in the Melbourne Convention Centre.

Prime Minister avoids climate protest and talk of climate change

The missing words at Julia Gillard's first address as Prime Minister to the National Press Club was "climate change". Outside the building Climate activists from Rising Tide Newcastle had dumped a ute full of coal at the entrance. The protesters called on the Gillard Government to announce a climate change policy that addresses Australia's principal source of greenhouse pollution - coal.

How to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2020

The public launch of the Beyond Zero Emissions report - Zero Carbon Australia 2020 - was delivered to an overflowing audience at Melbourne University last night. The report is one possible blueprint for acting on the challenge of climate change by converting the existing coal and gas fired carbon pollution dependent electricity generation to 100% renewables using only current technologies in ten years.

It has called for leaders of nations to instal solar panels on official residences, as part of global action on climate change on 10/10/10.

ILC accused of defrauding Aboriginal people

Goodooga, northwest NSW, 11 July 2010 -- Aboriginal people across Australia are expressing great concerns and anger at the operations of the government’s Indigenous Land Corporation (ILC), whose task is to purchase and give land to Aboriginal people unable to claim it through Native Title.

Political activist Michael Anderson, leader of the 3,000 Euahlayi living on both sides of the Queensland and NSW border, says he is receiving calls about this from various parts of the country.

Aboriginal activist and ex-player: "Racism rife in NSW Country Rugby League"

The racism-in-rugby furore leading to Timana Tahu handing back his Blues' jersey is not an isolated incident, says Michael Anderson, an Aboriginal political activist and former professional League player.

The NRL says there is no racism in rugby league. Many voices, including Aboriginal ex and current players, say there is.

Ex Manly player Anderson says for racist comments to still be brushed over within the NRL is an

indictment on the league.

He says racist attitudes in sport start at home - and are rife in country areas.

June 10th national day of action for equal pay for women

Thousands of Unionists marched around the country today in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Canberra, Adelaide, Darwin and many regional areas , organised by the Australian Services Union, which represents community sector workers across the country. They rallied in support of the ASU's equal pay test case to address lower pay among female-dominated community sector workers. ASU Assistant National Secretary Linda White said, "Women in full time paid work still earn 18 per cent less on average than men, which equates to $1 million less over a lifetime. “ See photos of the rallies here
