A far right movement is spreading across Europe. Its influence is unmistakable in the assaults on immigrant, women’s and gay rights; slander campaigns against unionists and public sector workers; and a the upsurge of racism, anti-Semitism and anti-Muslim prejudice.
In Greece’s recent election, the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn won seven percent of the vote, making it the first fascist party to enter a European parliament since World War II.
Here in Melbourne, fascist forces are using the same toxic combination to try building a mass movement. Neo-Nazis are active in the anti-abortion movement. They exploit the anti-refugee and anti-Muslim hysteria, peddled by the shock jock mouthpieces of the far right. Golden Dawn set up a branch in Melbourne, which is home to the largest Greek community outside of Athens.
This meeting will explain fascism. It will feature two reports, one analysing Golden Dawn and another exposing how the far right targets women’s reproductive rights. Understanding the conditions that fuel fascism is crucial. But the key question is how to stop it before it grows! Join the discussion.
Dinner will be served at 6:30 pm for an $8 donation. The meeting will commence at 7 pm.
Meeting at Solidarity Salon, 580 Sydney Road, Brunswick.
