The Wire: The environmental benefits of Indigenous people living on country

http://www.thewire.org.au/audio/emily-jane%20ens.mp3
13 Mar 15: "Tony Abbott caused outrage with his comment's that Aboriginal people living in remote areas are simply engaging in a lifestyle choice. That view has been widely criticised from a cultural point of view, but what about an environmental one?" Produced by Steven Riggall

The Conversation: Remote Indigenous communities are vital for our fragile ecosystems
http://theconversation.com/remote-indigenous-communities-are-vital-for-o...
13 Mar 15: "Amid the questioning of government support for remote Aboriginal communities and what Prime Minister Tony Abbott called the “lifestyle choices” of those who live there, the growing role of Aboriginal management of large areas of remote Australia has been overlooked. There are 1,200 small, discrete Indigenous communities in regional and remote Australia with various sources of income, including federal government “Working on Country” funding, as well as meagre and tightly regulated welfare payments. They fulfil a key role in populating large areas of outback Australia. ... " Authors: Craig Moritz, Emilie-Jane Ens & Jon Altman

BBC News: Australia's remote indigenous communities fear closure
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-31846031
12 Mar 15: "Derby Aboriginal elder Lorna Hudson was a child when government authorities in the 1960s moved her people from tiny Sunday Island off the remote north-west coast of Western Australia to the mainland. ... Comments earlier this week by Prime Minister Tony Abbott that people had made a "lifestyle choice" to live in these communities have intensified local fears people will be forced out of their homes, many of which are on ancestral land. ... Indigenous leaders say there has been no formal evaluation by the government of the costs and no consultation with the people who live there about what they need or expect. ... " By Marie McInerney, Melbourne, Victoria

arena - the website of left political, social and cultural commentary: Settler Colonial Closures by Dan Tout
‘Closure’ of WA Indigenous communities is in tune with the deep-seated logic of settler colonialism.
http://arena.org.au/settler-colonial-closures-by-dan-tout/
"Western Australian premier Colin Barnett has announced plans for the forced ‘closure’ of ‘at least 100 or more’ of the 274 remote Aboriginal communities across the state. It seems that South Australia may soon follow suit, with sixty locations in that state also earmarked for ‘closure’. As with the Howard government’s Northern Territory Emergency Response (the Intervention) and its extension under the Gillard government’s perversely named Stronger Futures legislation, we are seeing what Patrick Wolfe has characterised as a persistent settler colonial ‘logic of elimination’." The Age: Protesters "shut down Melbourne" to fight against closure of Aboriginal communities

13 Mar 15: "More than a thousand protesters shut down traffic in Melbourne's CBD to rally against the planned closure of remote Indigenous communities in West Australia. The group had hoped to confront Tony Abbott at the National Gallery, where he had been rumoured to be dining on Friday night. ... After giving up on seeing Mr Abbott at about 6pm, the swarm of angry protesters walked up from the gallery to the State Library waving Aboriginal flags and chanting "shame, Abbott, shame"." Health and Homelands: Good Value for Money?
A Report by Gavin Mooney DSocSc (hc) Cape Town
Commissioned by The Institute for Cultural Survival, Aboriginal Medical Services Alliance Northern Territory (AMSANT), MIWATJ Health Aboriginal Corporation
http://www.culturalsurvival.org.au/ref_docs/Health%20&%20Homelands_Good%...
2009: "Executive Summary
This paper examines the question of whether and how a study of the costs and benefits of the homelands might be conducted. It is concluded that cost benefit studies of different designs are possible. As others previously have established beyond reasonable doubt, there are positive health benefits from homelands living. Current policy statements by governments regarding centralization of services (and inevitably populations) are a threat to this improved health and, in the current parlance surrounding Aboriginal health, risk widening the health gap rather than closing it. ...
