Green Left Weekly: Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy protests at Parliament
https://www.greenleft.org.au/node/59781
15 Aug 15: "On August 11, RATE and its supporters took the protest to NSW Parliament House. "What we need to see is Aboriginal housing on The Block, Aboriginal housing controlled by Aboriginal communities," Jenny Leong the recently elected Greens MP for Newtown - an electorate that includes The Block - told Green Left Weekly. "We all know that there is money in the NSW state government's coffers for major developments yet at the same time it is unwilling to commit any funds for Aboriginal housing on The Block." Leong said that the trespass action was "disgusting" and "wasn't a solution". ... " By Peter Boyle, Sydney

11 Aug 15: "The Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy (RATE) is standing strong against repeated threats of eviction from Aboriginal land at The Block in Redfern. For more than 12 months we have stopped construction of a commercial development planned by the Aboriginal Housing Corporation (AHC) and building corporation Deicorp, and fought for affordable housing on Aboriginal land. This rally is to demand that the NSW State Government support the funding of low cost housing for First Nations peoples on Aboriginal land in The Block and a review of all commercial development that may stand in the way of this. ... Green Left Weekly: Redfern Aboriginal Tent Embassy defiant in court
https://www.greenleft.org.au/node/59769
14 Aug 15: " ... Munro addressed the crowd outside the court, which has reserved judgment until August 21. "Aboriginal housing must remain on The Block," she said. "We thought we had a breakthrough yesterday, but we will get more information today. "Our people decided 40 years ago that The Block would be ours. They put a black heart into this city. We will keep fighting till we win it." Murri writer, poet and RATE activist Ken Canning said: "They gave us Redfern in 1972, but people forget it is all Aboriginal land. So we go into this white man’s court today to defend ourselves against a charge of trespass. ... " By Rachel Evans, Sydney

Linksunten Indymedia: Fat cat and activist Aborigines fighting over prime Sydney land
https://linksunten.indymedia.org/de/node/150770
15 Aug 15: "Well-to-do and activist Aborigines are fighting over a piece of prime real estate in inner Sydney, Australia, known colloquially as ‚The Block‘. The land was originally gifted by the government 40 years ago for building affordable housing for Aboriginal people, including many who came to Australia's biggest city from rural areas. The bitter dispute now is between Michael Mundine, chief executive officer of the Aboriginal Housing Company, who has plans to gentrify much of the area with a $70 million commercial and residential development to the detriment of poor Aborigines, and activists who are squatting on the site with an "Aboriginal embassy" of tents. ... "Congratulations once again to Green Left Weekly. As I've often said to people all over the world when they ask what the press is like in Australia, 'Mostly owned by Murdoch and mostly unfree'. But I always add quickly, 'There is one newspaper that is independent of powerful interests and that's Green Left Weekly'." John Pilger
