ABC News: Youth suicide at crisis levels among Indigenous population, experts warn
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-06-14/youth-suicide-at-crisis-levels-amo...
14 Jun 15: " ... The issue of youth suicide has always been a problem, but in 2008 it passed a critical threshold. That year, suicide overtook road crashes as the number one cause of death for Queenslanders aged between 15 and 24 years old. But it is among Indigenous children that the rate truly rings alarm bells. ... Queensland coroner Terry Ryan, who cited the ABS in his recent inquest into two young suicide victims, said Indigenous children accounted for almost half of the suicides of children aged between 10 and 17 in Queensland between 2004 and 2012. ... 16 Jun 15: "Once again, do we have to wait for a United Nations Commissioner to shine the light on inequalities so as to bring Australia’s media, institutions and the majority of Australians up to speed on the horrific high rates of child removals, jailing and suicide rates? How long does the narrative of human misery and suffering have to get before Australia’s chattering classes, political parties, media chiefdoms and many human rights organisations begin to package these tragic issues with unrelenting focus, as issues that need to be chased down with sustained coverage? It is the same old deal - it has to get catastrophic before we begin to shed any light, before a beacon of hope. ... " By Gerry Georgatos

The Stringer: When the right people lead then lives will be saved
http://thestringer.com.au/when-the-right-people-lead-then-lives-will-be-...
20 Jun 15: " ... Suicide prevention should be one of the most urgent priorities of our times – globally and nationally. The rates of suicide should be known, disaggregated and unmasked as the humanitarian crisis that in effect it is - though little known, suicide is one of the issues of our times. ... One in ten deaths by suicide, this is a moral abomination. Wholesale Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander suicide prevention can only succeed if it includes the redressing of inequalities in reference to the social determinants – homelessness, housing, social infrastructure, education - the elimination of extreme poverty. Without the strengthening of social health, far too many will lapse under pressures ... " By Gerry Georgatos

The Stringer: A moral abomination - a narrative that is racialised, of human suffering and misery
http://thestringer.com.au/a-moral-abomination-a-narrative-that-is-racial...
19 Jun 15: "Aboriginal and/or Torres youth are 26 times more likely to be in detention than non-Aboriginal youth. By 2025 they will be 40 times more likely to be in detention. From a racialised lens they are already being jailed in juvenile detention at the world’s highest rate. ... One in every 28 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander boys have been in juvenile detention and one every 113 girls has been in juvenile detention. There are more than 10,000 adult Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders in Australian prisons. That translates to one in 35 of all Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders in prison. From a racialised lens I have estimated that this is the highest jailing rate in the world. I also estimate that 1 in 20 of all Aboriginal and/or Torres Islanders have spent time in jail. ... The Stringer: While nothing done about extreme poverty, jail rates will double again
http://thestringer.com.au/while-nothing-done-about-extreme-poverty-jail-...
16 Jun 15: "A few years ago Australian Corrective Services were claiming that the national prison population had finally begun to decrease. I disputed this. A few years later the prison population has increased by nearly 15 per cent. In the next ten years Australia will near double its prison population whereas it took twenty years from 1992 to 2012 to double the national prison population. The majority of the prospective doubling of the prison population will be borne by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders who will comprise around three quarters of the increase in future prisoners. In 2025, more than half the Australian prison population will be comprised of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders. Today, Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islanders comprise 28 per cent of the national prison population. ... " By Gerry Georgatos
