Pregnant Woman sentenced to be Flogged to Death

Mariam Yahya Ibrahim Ishag, 28, is eight months pregnant. A Sudanese court has sentenced her to be flogged to death, after finding her guilty of apostasy and adultery, and because she married a Christian man, which Muslim women are prohibited from doing, voiding the marriage.

On February 7, 2014, Meriam was arrested with her 20-month-old son, and incarcerated in a women's prison. She had not been charged nor did she receive a fair trial. Mariam Yahya Ibrahim had been ordered to abandon her newly adopted Christian faith and return to Islam. Judge Abbas al Khalifa, asked Ibrahim whether she would return to Islam. After she said, "I am a Christian," the death sentence was handed down.

A relative had turned her in to the police for marrying a Christian, according to the Sudan's Public Order Criminal Code. Meriam is a Muslim by default because she was born in Sudan. Therefore, her marriage to a Christian is a criminal act.

On March 4th, Meriam was charged with adultery and apostasy. The adultery charge came with a punishment of 100 lashes. The apostasy charge came with a punishment of death. As it stands, Meriam will be put to death following the birth of her second child.

Mariam's husband, Daniel, is not allowed to visit them or see his two-year-old son, Martin, who remains in prison with his mother.

Shariah law often turns law-abiding persons into criminals. Sudan's information minister, Ahmed Bilal Osman, stated that this is what Islamic countries adhere to. "It's not only Sudan. In Saudi Arabia, in all the Muslim countries, Muslims are not allowed at all to change their religion," he told the AFP news agency.

Other accounts of how women are treated in Islamic countries are incredibly unjust. The following are a couple of instances that took place in The United Arab Emirates (UAE) country of Dubai:

• Alicia Gali, an Australian woman was gang raped by three Islamists in Dubai. She was sentenced to prison for eight months for "illicit sex outside of marriage."

• Marte Deborah Dalelven, a 25-year-old Norwegian woman was knocked out and gang raped by several Islamists. She was sentenced to thirteen months in prison.

Under Islamic/Shariah laws, a woman that is raped is punished and not considered to be a victim.
