28 Nov 13: "The Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Act was originally introduced to protect cultural sites on Aboriginal land but a new round of community consultations is taking place to discuss amendments to the Act. Aboriginal elders are claiming to have been shut out of these consultations, which are designed to erode the control traditional owners have over their lands. A rally held in Sydney this week to launch ‘Culture Rides’ is start of a national campaign against these new consultations, designed to put pressure on governments and raise awareness in the wider community.
Featured in story: Steven Talbott, spokesperson for the Gomeroi Elders of Gunnedah"

29 Nov 13: "NEW SOUTH WALES: Aboriginal elders and community members have descended on state parliament to protest against cultural heritage reforms they say will open the door to corruption. About 40 people, many from regional communities, marched from Hyde Park to Parliament House in Sydney on Thursday to call on the government to scrap its controversial model to enact standalone Aboriginal culture and heritage legislation. ... Gomeroi woman Dolly Talbott said the proposed reforms gave too much power to too few people." By Tracker

18 Oct 13: "Damien Brown ABC Hobart ... To tell us more about the Bill, Damien Brown spoke to Legal officer for the Tasmanian Aboriginal Centre, Michael Mansell."
"Michael told Damien that the Bill is "a shock and a disappointment because we have been waiting now 18 years since the Liberal government talked to us in 1995 and said look, we're going to have to give you a new Aboriginal Heritage legislation that's equivalent of the European heritage leg so it'll be an independent body that will protect Aboriginal heritage and even Governments will have to get permission and so on. ... The biggest threat to Aboriginal heritage in Tasmania is from the Government, not the public...""

16 Nov 13: "The Tasmanian Aboriginal community and its supporters were outraged over the Aboriginal Heritage Protection Bill that was rushed through the lower house on November 13. ... This bill is intended to replace the outdated and racist Aboriginal Relics Act. Unfortunately, it maintains some of the worst aspects of the Relics Act. It devolves decision-making power to the minister rather than an Aboriginal body. This means that the government, which is the largest developer in the state, ultimately determines whether Aboriginal heritage is destroyed for a development to proceed."
