10 Oct 13: "William Bugmy's win in the High Court last week is significant, but it also highlights everything that's wrong with the way Aboriginal people are treated under the law, writes Sol Bellear. The story of William Bugmy highlights everything that's wrong with justice for Aboriginal people The High Court decision in the case of William Bugmy handed down last week is a significant win for Mr Bugmy, his family and the NSW Aboriginal Legal Service. They should all be congratulated for their efforts." By Sol Bellear, long-serving Chairman of the Aboriginal Medical Service, Redfern, and one of its founding members

21 Oct 13: "If we want to shift Aboriginal disadvantage, then self-determination is the only way. Recently I wrote a story for The Drum about the Bugmy High Court case. It sparked a flurry of commentary, much of it, unfortunately, quite ignorant. ... However, I argued while I respected the High Court decision, the case I’ll celebrate is the one in which the High Court determines it has no jurisdiction over Aboriginal people. If we want to shift Aboriginal disadvantage, then self-determination is the only way to achieve that." By Sol Bellear, Chairman of the Aboriginal Medical Service Redfern, a long time Aboriginal activist

25 Oct 13: "Imprisonment rates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are not just a national shame but an international disgrace for a nation that is the world’s second wealthiest nation per capita. ... Western Australia’s Nyungah Land and Culture worker, Iva Jackson-Hayward said that the policy of "mandatory imprisonment for what amount to minor offences should be thrown out the window" and instead Aboriginal youth should be sent onto Country with Elders, community leaders and support people. "The young need to engage with our Elders, with our culture workers, see that their identity matters, ... 25 Oct 13: "Restorative Justice Week is approaching and WA’s highly respected prison reform advocate and academic, Dr Brian Steels is calling for Governments to comprehend restorative justice principles if they want to be serious about reducing the rising prison population. Restorative Justice Week will be commemorated November 17 to 24, ... Dr Steels said that without a redemptive restorative justice approach to sentencing then Australia will just continue to double its prison populations every decade. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) peoples bear a disproportionate burden."
