Last week, Ms Farrer read out to the Legislative Assembly, "We, the members of the community of the Kimberley say that Western Australian Aboriginal communities, have the highest suicide rates not just in the nation but in the world. ... Western Australia’s Nyungah Land and Culture worker, Iva Jackson-Hayward said that the policy of "mandatory imprisonment for what amount to minor offences should be thrown out the window" and instead Aboriginal youth should be sent onto Country with Elders, community leaders and support people. 24 Oct 13: "WA: A mental health bill has been introduced to the West Australian parliament that will provide stricter rules for the use of electro-convulsive therapy and allow Aboriginal elders to be involved in treating indigenous patients. ... She [Mental Health Minister Helen Morton] said it was also important that the bill allowed for traditional healers and elders to be involved in the treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing mental illness." 28 Oct 13: "NATIONAL: Now is the time for the Abbott government to act on closing the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australia, says the country’s first Aboriginal MP in federal parliament. Western Australia’s Liberal Member for Hasluck, Ken Wyatt, says that despite the $3.5 billion in funding that goes towards trying to close the gap, outcomes are very poor. "It doesn’t matter how much money you pump into Aboriginal affairs if you don’t have community engagement," he said as he delivered the annual oration for the Menzies school of health research in Darwin on Saturday." AAP

16 Oct 13: "Greens Member for the Mining and Pastoral Region Robin Chapple MLC is appalled at the State Government’s decision to reduce the number of Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEOs) in schools around Western Australia. "With all the talk of ‘closing the gap’ and ‘overcoming Indigenous disadvantage’, I would have expected to see a more concerted effort and more resources go into educating Aboriginal and Islander children, not less," Mr Chapple said."
