Regional Rail Destroys More Heritage

The Regional Rail Link Authority continues its merry destruction of cultural heritage in Melbourne's western suburbs. This time it is demolishing the heritage listed McKay Footbridge in Sunshine. The bridge, registered with Heritage Victoria as one of the few remaining pedestrian rail bridges of this kind and a part of the historic McKay Memorial Gardens, is being demolished to make way for additional freight lines as part of the Authority's "future-proofing" the rail system. Regional Rail intends to replace the heritage bridge with another version of the generic behemoths that are being built all along the path of the project. The Authority and its contractors continue to be utterly indifferent to the destruction and dislocation of communities and community cultural heritage.
