The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) will hold their first ever National Aboriginal Primary Health Care Summit in Adelaide later this month.

8 Aug 13: "The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO) will today launch a new blueprint to turn the spotlight onto the appalling state of Aboriginal male health.
Life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander males is as high as 17 years lower than that of non-Indigenous Australian males and Aboriginal males fare poorly across a range of health indicators including chronic disease and mental health.
The blueprint will be launched today in Canberra at Ochre Day.
NACCHO Chair, Justin Mohamed said that Aboriginal male health needs to be a priority and the blueprint provides a way forward.
"The importance of having a blueprint for Aboriginal male health cannot be overestimated, and NACCHO provides some strong directions and recommendations to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal males," Mr Mohamed said.
"To close the gap we need to see ongoing investment in community-controlled, comprehensive primary male health care - services that are culturally appropriate, accessible, affordable, good quality, and innovative and respect and promote the rights of Aboriginal males, in urban, rural and remote areas. ... "

The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation will unveil a blueprint to turn the spotlight on to the appalling state of Aboriginal male health. ... The Aboriginal Male Healthy Futures Blueprint 2013-2030, to be released in Canberra, argues a new strategy is needed to focus on men with specific programs and to overcome their reluctance to admit their ill health, particularly in front of women."

Dr Hambleton welcomed the focus on the health of Aboriginal men as part of broader approach to improving Indigenous health. "Much of the health inequality between Aboriginal Australians and other Australians is due to the poor health and lower life expectancy of Aboriginal men," Dr Hambleton said."

The agreement - which sets health targets to be achieved by 2030 - expired in June, and has yet to be re-signed by all states. The chair of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation, Justin Mohamed, says he is concerned that without a new agreement, life expectancy in Indigenous communities will decline. Mr Mohamed told Thisanka Siripala involvement of states and territories is crucial."

1 Aug 13: "Over-the-counter painkillers pose a serious risk to the health of Aboriginal people because of a lack of understanding about their use, according to new University of Adelaide research. Professor Charlotte de Crespigny said 3 out of the 31 people she interviewed recently had blood transfusions from problems caused by their use of anti-inflammatories. She called for more culturally and linguistically appropriate information so that Aboriginal people may better understand what medications they're taking and the associated risks." AAP
