[SNAICC: Secretariat of National Aboriginal and Islander Child Care]
http://www.snaicc.org.au/news-events/fx-view-article.cfm?loadref=32&id=1126
16 Jul 13: "SNAICC warmly welcomes the ground-breaking appointment of Mr Andrew Jackomos as Victoria’s - and Australia’s - first Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Youth.
SNAICC congratulates the Victorian Government on its initiative to appoint a commissioner dedicated to the needs of the state’s Koori children and youth -and implores other state and territory governments to follow suit.
We believe Mr Jackomos is an excellent choice as inaugural commissioner. He comes from a famous and highly respected Aboriginal family in Victoria and he knows the Koori communities and the challenges intimately.
Importantly, as a long-serving senior public servant at both the state and federal levels, Mr Jackomos also knows the workings of governments and departments - and has long advocated the importance of Aboriginal people participating in the delivery of government programs and services that impact on them. ... 16 Jul 13: "Australia’s first Aboriginal Children's Commissioner, Andrew Jackomos, has a long-standing history of advocating for the rights of Aboriginal people, says Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Social Justice Commissioner, Mick Gooda.
Mr Gooda described the Victorian Government’s appointment of Mr Jackomos as a significant and positive development for vulnerable children.
"Many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families continue to experience trauma because of past actions by government and non-government agencies.
"A dedicated Aboriginal Children's Commissioner will help reduce the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children who are trapped in the justice system," Mr Gooda said.
Mr Jackomos has extensive experience working in Aboriginal affairs and administration.
He was instrumental in developing and implementing the Victorian Aboriginal Justice Agreement and the Koori Court system, and is the director of the Koori Justice Unit."

"Don't let the Premiers and Chief Ministers walk away from Close the Gap
There are Aboriginal children alive today who would not be alive without Close the Gap - a campaign that ANTaR helped start in 2005. Despite 200,000 people calling for all governments to commit to closing the life expectancy gap within a generation this life saving work is now under threat. The funding for the 'closing the gap' policy comes from a national partnership agreement between the Federal, State and Territory Governments that was signed in 2008. This agreement is set to expire June 30 and to date only the Federal and Victorian Governments have indicated that they will contribute funds to a new agreement. Health policy typically rates as one of the top election issues and one where Labor has a historic advantage.
