Event: Wed 24 April 2013: Canberra, ACT
Canberra Anzac Eve Peace Vigil 2013
"With each successive Vigil on the eve of Anzac Day,
our contemplation of the sufferings in Australia’s war
involvements is deepening, with particular recognition
and sorrow for the ongoing trauma to Aboriginal peoples
in the wake of Australia’s Frontier Wars; ...
This year, a ceremonial focus is the kindling of the
Peace Fire at the Aboriginal Memorial, embers of
which will light the lanterns and Welcome to Country
ceremony at the top of Mt. Ainslie, light the community
gathering and smoking ceremony at Remembrance Park,
and light the walkers’ way to the all-night Peace Vigil
at the end of Anzac Parade."

24 Apr 13: "We remember with respect, the great sacrifices of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Maori ANZACS. ... There's growing recognition of the role First Nations soldiers from Australia and New Zealand played in the two World Wars. Ceremonies will be held on ANZAC Day in both countries to honour those soldiers who served. And serve they did, despite the fact that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander soldiers weren't recognised as citizens of the country they risked, and gave their lives for."

25 Apr 13: "Indigenous soldiers have been remembered in a ceremony in Canberra and in the streets of Sydney's inner suburb of Redfern, amid calls to better recognise Aboriginal diggers' contributions. "Amongst non-Indigenous Australians, the service and sacrifice of Torres Strait Islanders and Aboriginal men is very much unknown", said Gareth O' Connell from the ATSI Veterans and Services Association at a ceremony in Canberra. Indigenous Australia's contribution to the nation's security has been present at every conflict from the colonial forces through to the current operations in the Middle East."

The Stringer: Dumbartung convenes Suicide Crisis Summit
http://thestringer.com.au/dumbartung-convenes-suicide-crisis-summit/
26 Apr 13: "Dumbartung Aboriginal Corporation is leading the way in trying to have something done at long last about reducing the high rates of Aboriginal youth suicide. ... The Aboriginal youth suicide rates in the Kimberley are among not only the nation’s worst but among the world’s worst rates. Aboriginal youth suicide is an endemic tragedy throughout Western Australia ... The stressors and underwriters of youth suicide – the high levels of unemployment, lack of substantive education opportunities, chronic and abject poverty – are pernicious throughout Aboriginal communities and especially in the remote." Socialist Alternative: Racism at the University of Western Australia
http://www.sa.org.au/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&id=7721:prosh-wes...
24 Apr 13: "Prosh is a newspaper put out once a year by the University of Western Australia Student Guild. Every year it sets a new benchmark in offensive content. This year it has been criticised for, among other things, a "satirical" piece titled "Aboriginal Dreamtime Horoscopes with Nooloo Billy". According to the paper’s defenders, the piece is meant to satirise racist views towards the Aboriginal community. In reality, it makes fun of Aboriginal people and purveys a racist viewpoint."
