25 Jan 13: "About 60 people have gathered on Heirisson Island this morning for cultural talks and ceremony. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags festooned the island, along with signs proclaiming it as the Noongar Tent Embassy. Noongar Tent Embassy member Helen Corbett said the group wanted to come to Matagarup, the traditional name for the island, to "celebrate their rights as sovereign people" and "educate people about the recognition of our sovereignty." ... 25 Jan 13: "Australian National University academic Dr John Blaxland has revealed a new design that incorporates the current Australian flag, the Union Jack and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. ... His design starts with the black and red of the Aboriginal flag but replaces the sun with the seven-pointed Federation Star. It is filled with 250 dots to represent the range of indigenous languages combined with the native tongues of immigrants."

25 Jan 13: "Traditional owners, environmentalists, the Australian Greens and members of the Broome community in Western Australia are outraged at the WA government's decision to approve the destruction of Aboriginal heritage sites in the region. The Minister for Indigenous Affairs Peter Collier has granted Woodside Energy Limited approval under the WA Aboriginal Heritage Act, Section 18, to begin investigative works as part of its $40 billion dollar liquefied natural gas plans. ... The traditional owners who have claimed ownership over the area are the Goolarabooloo people and the Jabir Jabir people."

24 Jan 13: "The State Government says it still does not know how many projects are vulnerable to legal challenge because of mistakes made acquiring land. Late last year, the Government was forced to restart the compulsory acquisition of land north of Broome for the Browse LNG project because the correct process had not been followed. It was then revealed the same problem, a failure to notify the Native Title Tribunal of the Government intention to take the land, had been made on acquisitions dating back to the 1990's."

25 Jan 13: "The Northern Territory Director of Public Prosecutions has defended his decision not to investigate possible criminal charges in the case of Kwementyaye Briscoe. Despite committing no crime, Kwementyaye Briscoe was taken into custody for being drunk in January 2012. The Northern Territory Coroner Greg Cavanagh found that the probable cause of Mr Briscoe's death was a combination of being very drunk, positional asphyxia and aspiration, which is the act of inhaling fluid into the bronchi and lungs, that obstructed his airways."

Les Malezer will convene a discussion on sovereignty and constitutional recognition in Canberra tomorrow. A Federal Parliamentary Inquiry into constitutional recognition began this week. Mr. Malezer told 98.9fm the Racial Discrimination Act isn't enough to protect Indigenous people from raced-based laws and it must be done in the Constitution."
