These moves follow a week and a half of refugee protests and rebellions within the detention centres. The detained refugees have thrown their detention centres into turmoil with mass protests around the country, particularly in the camps at Villawood and Curtin.
Declan Murphy, a refugee rights activist and member of Socialist Alternative, the group that has initiated today’s protest, has criticised the Gillard Government for its asylum policy. “The move to re-introduce Temporary Protection Visas is a return to the brutal policies of Howard era. TPVs allow the Government to more easily deport refugees back to the persecution from which they fled.”
Murphy says that “today’s protest is a chance for everyone who stands with the refugees and in support of their human rights to condemn the Government’s policy of mandatory detention.” He calls on everyone who opposes the asylum policy of the Gillard Government to “stand in solidarity with the refugee protests happening across the country by coming along tonight.”
Tonight’s protest takes place after the national day of action against mandatory detention last Monday, where protesters converged on detention centres around Australia to demonstrate against the Gillard Government’s asylum policy.
