Yvonne Margarula continues the Mirrar people's fight against uraninum mining in Kakadu

Yvonne Margarula continues the fight of the Mirrar people against Uranium mining on their land and within the boundaries of Kakadu National Park by calling on the Federal Government to block the expansion of the Ranger Uranium Mine. According to the ABC Online Yvonne is quoted as saying "We are worrying about what might happen, poison water". Referrig to the tailings dam she said "The water getting bigger, it's going downstream," adding ""The mining company - they wouldn't listen to us,". Yvonne and the Mirrar successfully joined forces with environmentalists and through a huge campaing involving both direct action in the form of a blockade resulting in hundreds of arrests and international lobbying efforts to stop the opening of the Jabiluka Uraninum Mine in 1998. Rio Tinto, the parent company of ERA, owns the mining lease have said they will not open Jabiluka mine without permission of the Mirrar however they seem to be trying to get around this agreement by massively expanding the Ranger Mine instead against the wishes of the traditional owners.

We hope that people and especially the Australian government will stop mining uranium NOW. The Kakadu National Park needs to be cleaned up immediately, for no scientist in the world can even measure all levels of radiation yet! Please read the article in The Independent, UK about the leader of the people living near those mines: Yvonne Margarula.
